Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a traumatic damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of function such as mobility or sensation. It involves activation of inflammatory cells as well as neurotoxic mediators. There is a clear need for improved treatment for SCI. A critical issue is to reduce tissue damage and to preserve the surviving neurons.
We have shown that a low molecular weight compound with affinity to the target receptor exhibits neuroprotective effects immediately after SCI injury in vivo, resulting in an accelerated functional recovery.
